This post is an introduction to what it is this blog is about and why your role as a reader and commenter is essential.
Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog website. This is my first post ever, and for that reason I would like to take a moment to really share with you, my reader, why it is I am developing this blog. Seeing as we currently find ourselves living through a world pandemic, I have taken this situation as an opportunity to go beyond my comfort zone a create this blog website. The use of technology and social platforms in the present in astounding and ever expanding, as face to face interactions are reduced.
Parting from my interest in the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS), I decided to develop an engagement activity for my IB program that was fit for the current world situation, thus the birth of this blog. In this blog I will evaluate the concepts of power, sovereignty and international relations when placed in the context of a pacific treaty such as the ATS.
Out of curiosity and personal interest, I want to investigate the application of said concepts by veto powers and other signing countries in a source of valuable resources and strategic location in the future, such as the Antarctic.
This precisely is where your role as a reader and commenter is essential to my journey. I need you to comment and express your opinion in regards to the application of said concepts, the interests of global actors, the effectiveness of soft power and everything else mentioned in this blog so that I can learn from your perspectives and find valuable information.
Finally, through "Weekly Antarctic" I also seek to spread awareness of one of the last grand sources of renewable energy and natural resources for humanity holding over 70% of the Earth's freshwater reservoir according to the Nationals Science Foundation (NSF). In the present, global warming and pollution are posing a threat to the survival of humanity in the near future, and for this reason we must protect the resources found in Antarctica. I believe that through the spreading of awareness we can avoid political or military incentives from blinding the judgment of world leaders when it comes to this natural treasure.
